Hiring the right contractor matters more than any material you choose. Here are 10 questions to ask before you hire anyone for a remodel in McDonough, Stockbridge or anywhere in Henry County, plus the red flags to watch for.
10 questions to ask
- How long have you been in business locally? A long local track record means they’ll be around if something needs attention later.
- Are you insured, and can I see the certificate? Ask for proof of general liability insurance, and workers’ compensation if they have employees.
- Do you hold the state license this job requires? You can look up Georgia contractor licenses through the Secretary of State’s online lookup.
- Who will actually be in my home? Ask whether they use their own crew or subcontractors.
- Will I get a written, itemized estimate? Vague verbal quotes lead to disputes.
- Who pulls the permits? Your contractor should, and the permit should be in their name.
- What’s the payment schedule? Payments should follow completed work, not run far ahead of it.
- How do you handle changes or surprises? Changes should be approved in writing before work continues.
- What’s your timeline, and what could delay it?
- Can I see recent work and reviews? Look at Google reviews and the BBB, and ask for photos of recent projects.
Red flags
- Pressure to sign today or a “today only” price
- A large cash payment demanded up front
- No written contract or estimate
- Asking you to pull the permit yourself
- No physical address or local phone number
- Showing up uninvited after a storm
How to compare estimates
Get two or three written estimates, and compare scope as well as price. The lowest number often leaves things out, like demolition, disposal, permits or trim. Ask each contractor to explain any line you don’t understand.
