7 Signs Your Bathroom Needs Renovation (Don’t Ignore #4)

Bathrooms take more daily wear than any other room, and small problems there turn into expensive ones fast. Here are seven signs it’s time to renovate, including the one Henry County homeowners most often ignore.

1. Soft or spongy floors

If the floor gives a little near the toilet or tub, water has likely reached the subfloor. This doesn’t fix itself. The longer it goes, the more subfloor and framing need replacing.

2. Mold or mildew that keeps coming back

A little mildew on grout is normal. Mold that returns days after you clean it, or that shows up on the ceiling or walls, usually means poor ventilation or moisture behind the surface.

3. Cracked or loose tiles

Cracked tile or crumbling grout lets water get behind the wall. In a shower, that’s how hidden rot starts.

4. Water stains on the ceiling below

This is the one people ignore. A brown stain on the ceiling under an upstairs bathroom means water is escaping from a drain, supply line, toilet seal or shower pan. Painting over it hides the symptom while the damage spreads. Get it checked right away.

5. Peeling paint or bubbling walls

Paint that peels or bubbles is a sign of constant humidity. Often the exhaust fan is undersized, broken or vents into the attic instead of outside.

6. Low water pressure or slow drains

Older homes may have aging supply lines or drain pipes. If clearing clogs doesn’t help, the plumbing itself may need updating, which is easiest to do during a renovation.

7. It doesn’t work for your life anymore

Stepping over a tub wall gets harder with age. A walk-in shower with a low threshold, grab bars and a bench makes a bathroom safer and easier to use for years to come.

What to do next

Not every sign means a full gut. Sometimes regrouting, a new exhaust fan or replacing a toilet seal is enough. We’ll tell you honestly which it is. Typical bathroom projects in Henry County range from about $4,000 for a guest bath refresh to $20,000โ€“$35,000+ for a luxury master bath. See our bathroom cost guide for details.
